This Spring I met with Bailey Rogers, and Monica Melanson at Killarny Lake to capture this stunning image.
When we arrived on location, there was a single red rose sticking up from the ground where we wanted to shoot. It was clear that someone had placed it there intentionally, and my mind began to make up stories as to the many reasons why someone had left such a beautiful flower there all alone.
Had a child lost their Mother and went to Killarny Lake to think and reflect? Did a women miscarriage and leave a rose there in remembrance? Did a women sit on that very hill wishing she could be a mom on mothers day? Did someone leave it for another mom who wasn't feeling very maternal that day? Was a female in their child baring years getting asked one too many times when she was going to have kids and went to the lake to get away, only to be handed a rose in assumption that because she was a women of a certain age, she must be a mom?
As I wondered all these things, Bailey and Monica decided that the rose would look good in our shoot, and I agreed. It meant something.
I want to dedicate this image not only to mothers everywhere, but to women everywhere, whatever their choice regarding children may be.
