Pantone's color of the year is more than just a color chosen at random that designers (both fashion and interior) chose to slap onto various products.  The color of the year is chosen with great care and consideration, which is why I needed a few days to really ponder this years color choice Greenery and decide if I felt it was an appropriate choice or not.

WHAT IS PANTONE'S COLOR OF THE YEAR?
According to Pantone's website, the color of the year is defined as "A symbolic color selection; a color snapshot of what we see taking place in our global culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude."

WHAT IS THIS YEAR'S COLOR?
This year's color of the year is Greenery.  A fresh and vivid green that symbolizes reassurance, rejuvenation, and a connection with nature and each other.

INITIAL THOUGHTS:
Initially I was kind of angry with this years color selection.  If the color of the year really represents a global culture, how is a color that symbolizes reassurance, rejuvenation and connection with each other a true  reflection of the global world right now!?  We are currently living in a world with war, disagreement, sadness and death.  2016 was a hard year, and many of us wish it was over all ready. To sum up our current world in one snap shot, and to choose a snapshot that is based on "a desire to reconnect with nature" is so off base to me.

The US elections were just a few short weeks ago, and the USA elected a president who doesn't even believe in global warming! I feel like this color choice only reflects the views of more left wing thinking people. There is only a portion of us around the world who believe in changing the future of our environment and reconnecting with nature. I do not believe that most people are searching for a connection with nature, rather we are a society of people who continue to long for connection with people through technology.

BUT THEN I THOUGHT...
The website also says, "greenery bursts fourth into 2017 to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize, Greenery symbolizes the re-connection we seek with nature, one another, and a larger purpose." - Leatrice Eiseman  The more I consider this year's color choice, the more I think it was chosen for us as a symbol of hope.  I think that no matter how much ruble, destruction, chaos, and death, there is always room for a seed to sprout and life to grow.

TO SUM UP:
I think that Greenery is a reminder to us that technology isn't everything.  The earth really does matter, and relationships with each other, real human relationships are one of the most important things, and is something that needs to be nurtured and cared for just like a plant.  I also think that as much as a crummy year 2016 was, this is pantone's color of the year for 2017 not 2016 and I think that a lot of us are approaching the new year as a clean slate and a fresh start, hoping that there are better things to come!

Even though I am not crazy about the color itself, I am happy about what the color stands for, and I do hope that 2017 is fulled with revitalization, rejuvenation, and re-connection.
