THE BUSINESS OF BEING CREATIVE

You could argue that if an artist is not satisfied with making art just for fun and pure enjoyment that they are not a true “artist,” or that they should give it up because it is not bringing them joy.  I do not agree with that.  To me, the business side of making art has always been equally as important to me as the creation itself.  When I was little, for example, I made friendship bracelets.  Only, I didn't just want to make them, I also wanted to sell them.  

I think it has always been hard for artists to find that balance.  The creative aspect is so important and often comes easier to us than the business side of things.  On the contrary, business savvy people are creative in different ways. They tend to be more creative in terms of concepts and ideas rather than the actual making of items.  

In my experience, talent doesn't equal success.  You could be the best painter in the entire world, but if no one knows who you are, so what?  I think this is why artists get the "poor starving artist" wrap.  Creating and making comes so easy to us, but in getting it out there and promoting ourselves, we often fall short.  When no one knows or cares about what you are doing, they aren't going to buy your work.  Then, with no sales, comes no money.  

So here's the challenge: create, explore, imagine, dream, work hard.  Work towards pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.  Work at putting yourself out there.  Work at being a dedicated professional and advocate your craft.
